  • 1 cup black gram lentils (Mah Chana)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 4 cups water (adjust as desired)
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil

Instructions

  1. Heat ghee or oil in a large pot over medium heat; add cumin seeds until fragrant.
  2. SautΓ© chopped onions until golden brown.
  3. Stir in ginger-garlic paste; cook until the raw smell disappears.
  4. Add tomatoes and cook until softened (about 5–7 minutes).
  5. Mix in turmeric and red chili powder, then add rinsed lentils and stir well.
  6. Pour in water; bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer covered for 30–40 minutes until lentils are tender.
  7. Check seasoning, adjust salt if needed, drizzle with melted ghee, and garnish with cilantro before serving.
