Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round baking pans and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and sugar.
  3. In another bowl, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add sugar and mix until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time along with vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  5. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to the creamed mixture until fully combined.
  6. Divide batter into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks. Once cooled, slice each layer horizontally if desired.
  8. Layer whipped cream and cherries between cake layers; top with more whipped cream and garnish as desired.
